We are proposing a strong visual style of handwritten messages which sit apart from the world and at odds with the surroundings rather than integrating them into the environment. These are personal and private messages which cannot be seen or read by anyone else. These emotionally charged communications - which will be energetic and passionate as they animate onto the screen - are taking place above the surface of these seemingly quiet and banal environments.
The personal writing style has an innocence and naivety reflecting the age of the protagonists but can be at odds with the content of the messages or the darkness of their thoughts.
This will create a consistent style and tone of voice across the series for all typography and messages whether they appear over landscape shots, the bedroom set or as full-screen graphics. This visual signature can be incorporated into the other graphic requirements across the series including year-book introductions with scribbled doodles in the margin or documents which have a hand-written notes, circles and underlines.
The use of handwritten text and hand-drawn images reflects the personal and unique nature of these messages. Whether they are diary entries or Twitter posts they are coming from a deeply personal space and this style will add to the unique voice of the words appearing on screen.
The handwritten text can reflect the nature of the message - aggressive and angry with scratchy, angular marks or consoling with a softer, more cursive style. Adding Twitter-style date and time stamps or the month and date at the top of a diary page will help contextualise the writing as part of an internet post or a diary entry.
All of the handwritten and hand-drawn assets will have an animated ‘boil’ which will keep them alive and urgent.
Full-screen Graphics
On occasion it may be useful to transition the graphics through to full-screen.
Monochrome versions
If the full-colour versions are deemed to colourful or there is a need to transition to something simpler the same designs will work as one colour.
